Following the events of The Batman (2022), Oz Cobb, a.k.a. the Penguin, is playing a game to take over the criminal underworld of Gotham. Aside from a bat signal in the final shot of the season finale, we never got our first glimpse of Robert Pattinson in “The Penguin.” In this short video, IMDb attempts to answer: Where the hell was Batman? Colin Farrell fought hard to get his version of the Penguin in The Batman (2022), but he didn’t succeed. For his own series, however, the character is portrayed as a casual tobacco user who prefers cigars. The DC Studios logo is set in a rainy Gotham alley. An umbrella falls and the logo changes to the Warner Bros. logo. On The Graham Norton Show: Lady Gaga/Demi Moore/Colin Farrell/Richard Ayoade/Jack Savoretti (2024). The first episode is a direct sequel to Matt Reeves’ Batman, and I imagine those who haven’t seen it will be a bit lost. However, I watched The Batman a while ago, and this show did an admirable job of quickly reacquainting me with where the movie left off, without getting bogged down in a didactic recap. It also captures the aesthetic and somber tone of the movie nicely, though the show has far more moments of sly levity than the movie. As in Batman, Colin Farrell does an excellent job of portraying the Penguin as a stereotypical mobster “street guy:” rude, profane, mercurial, and quick to violence; but also savvy, cunning, and able to read people. The character may have absolutely nothing to do with the comic book version, but he’s interesting in his own right. I have my doubts about the show’s casting of The Penguin as a teenage sidekick; and I don’t know if The Penguin’s machinations will be enough to sustain a full season. So far, though, it’s off to a great start.
