It follows a story of love, friendship, sadness, and healing, about a writer who adopts a Great Dane that belonged to a deceased friend and mentor. While most authors do not like the film adaptation of their book, Sigrid Nunez has stated that she is satisfied with the way her book is presented in this film adaptation. Seen at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 11, 2024 (First Screening) Format: Regular Film The story does not know which direction it is going in, that is why most of the time it goes on and on, which seems to have no end, and here comes the part where the viewer will feel the long and heavy duration of its journey, which is not even long, but seems to be so because of the slow and sometimes boring pace that the story has. The dog is undoubtedly the best part of the movie. The way he was trained to show these emotions and use his body language to say something is very impressive. I really did not like the way the story approached Bill Murray’s character, as he seemed very useless. To me, the movie is more like a story between a dog and a grieving person and not about a suicidal writer who died and left a dog outside. It felt very chaotic in that sense and could have easily gone deeper in terms of that theme or shown a flashback that would have supported Bill Murray’s character. Other than that, nothing special, but overall, a cute and warm movie to watch!
