(2024) The first half of the film is more of a character study, where Annette, a deeply unhappy and lonely housewife, soon discovers that her husband Ben is having an affair with Alicia, a famous actress. The second half of the film is more of a thriller, where we start to pick up the pace and the wheels in Annette’s head start to turn. The film is a real slow burn: cold and wintry at first, then hot and bubbling, then explosive in its final act. Thrilling, gripping and unsettling. It’s anchored by a wonderful performance from Daisy Ridley. She’s a real revelation. Her quiet moment of anger flares up. There’s an iconic scene where she breaks a mirror after being pushed into it for a few moments, symbolizing their crumbling marriage. Shazad Latif is also good here. The film has a few generic aspects. The trailer is a bit misleading. It can drag on and get a little tired at times. The ending may be cathartic and rewarding for some viewers, but neutral for others. Hiba Ahmed, as Matilda, the daughter, is often not a very good child performance in films. She felt more like a prop than a character. And Matilda Lutz is really beautiful and charming and convincing as a movie star in the context of the film, and that’s okay. Maybe it’s because of Lutz’s Italian that many of her lines sounded awkward or stilted. If you like thrillers with strong acting, especially those involving female angst, sensuality, and infidelity, this will be for you.
