Synopsis
Emilia Pérez follows four remarkable women in Mexico, each searching for their own happiness
Cartel leader Emilia calls on Rita, an underappreciated lawyer, to help her fake her death so she can finally live authentically as her true self. Karla Sofía Gascón talks about the two years of preparation that led to this challenging role in Jacques Audiard’s film and the two extremes of her own personality that she had to play as Emilia and Manitas. Jacques Audiard said he was inspired by the idea of a musical from a chapter in a novel about a drug dealer who yearns to change his identity.

Emilia Perez isn’t a bad film, but I found it a bit flat. At times, the story felt a little too easy on the characters, lacking tension or conflict. Emilia in particular is transformed into a largely positive character, even though we know from the story that she wasn’t always that good.
As someone who doesn’t usually like musicals, this film didn’t change my mind
The film deals with a wide range of themes, but struggles to fully explore them. Instead of diving deep into one idea, it spreads itself too thin, leaving a few threads underdeveloped. However, I can appreciate that it was the director’s vision, and I know many viewers will enjoy the musical elements.
Emilia Perez is an enjoyable film overall
To its credit, some of the musical numbers were well-executed, especially those by Zoe Saldana. Her performance was exceptional and probably the biggest revelation of the film, elevating many scenes with her presence and talent. While I don’t quite understand her recognition at Cannes, she has her moments.
