Synopsis
Emilia Pérez follows four extraordinary women in Mexico, each searching for their own happiness
Cartel leader Emilia hires Rita, an underrated lawyer, to help her fake her death so she can finally live authentically as the real her. Karla Sofía Gascón talks about the two years of preparation that led to this challenging role in Jacques Audiard’s film and the two extremes of her own personality that she had to play as Emilia and Manitas. Jacques Audiard said that he got the inspiration for the idea for the musical from a chapter in a novel about a drug dealer who longs to change his identity.

Emilia Perez is not a bad film, but I found it a bit flat. In places, the story felt a bit too easy for the characters, lacking tension and conflict. Emilia in particular is transformed into an extremely positive character, even though we know from the backstory that she wasn’t always that good.
As someone who normally doesn’t like musicals, this film didn’t change my mind
The film deals with a wide range of themes, but struggles to fully explore them. Rather than delving deeply into any given idea, it spreads itself out too thinly, leaving several threads undeveloped. However, I can appreciate that it was the director’s vision, and I know many viewers will enjoy the musical elements.
Overall, Emilia Perez is an enjoyable film
To their credit, some of the musical numbers were well-acted, especially those by Zoe Saldana. Her performance was excellent and undoubtedly the biggest revelation of the film, elevating many scenes with her presence and talent. While I don’t really understand his praise at Cannes, he has his moments.
